CARE is established in Rwanda since 1984, and currently covers 15 districts through active programs. The current 2021-2025 program strategy focuses on supporting 1.5 million disadvantaged women and girls aged 10 to 59, to transition out of poverty and thrive in the sustainable private-led economy, with equal rights and dignified living conditions. CARE equips women and girls, with resources to uplift themselves, their families and their communities out of poverty.
CARE Rwanda is actively engaged in several development projects, including The Gender Equality and Resilience (GEAR) Project (2024-2029), which aims to support 25,000 marginalized women, girls, and youth by creating sustainable income opportunities and promoting an enabling environment for them to thrive. The Kungahara Project (2024-2026) aims to improve food systems and nutrition security targeting 31,000 women and youth small holder farmers. The Supporting and Enhancing Resilient and Viable Employment Opportunities (SERVE) project (2023-2027) focuses on creating and strengthening 80,000 employment opportunities primarily for women and girls. In addition, the Powered by Women in Rwanda project advances gender equality for 161,047 women and girls in Rwanda’s Eastern Province by targeting barriers to women’s economic justice, advocating for Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), and preventing Violence against women and girls.
In line with the locally led agenda, CARE Rwanda strongly collaborates with the Government of Rwanda to align with national priorities, while implementing all its projects through national partners (local civil society organizations and private sector); to date over 60% of budget CARE’s budget in Rwanda is managed through its seven active partners.
